¨C Brief History of Chinese Ophthalmological Society

With the introduction of Western ophthtalmology to China in The early 19th century the eye doctor volume grew up and the academic standards improved gradually. At the early stage of 20th century, some eye doctors spontaneously established local ophthalmological institute.

In April 1937, the representatives of ophthalmology who were attending the 12th National Congress of Chinese Medical Association initiated to establish the national unification of the Chinese ophthalmological Institute, with president Zhou Chenghu and vice president Lin Wenbing. The same year this institute located in Shanghai was halted for Marco Polo Bridge Incident. During the 15th National Congress of the Chinese Medical Association held in Nanjing,1947, the Institute of Ophthalmology Organization reinstated. Lin Wenbing and Chen Yaozhen were nominated as president and vice president respectively.

On the 16th National Congress of Chinese Medical Association held in August, 1950 in Beijing, the delegates elected the committee of the ophthalmology institute. The charter was adopted and the organization was officially denominated as ¡°Chinese Ophthalmological Society"(COS), with Bi Huade as president and Luo Zongxian as vice president. Later in that year, COS moved to Beijing with the Chinese Medical Association from Shanghai. Since then various provinces and municipalities ophthalmological society had been set up or resumed activities.

In 1965, the national congress was held in the name of COS, which was know as the "first" congress of Chinese Ophthalmological Society (CCOS). In 1979, the second CCOS was held . Subsequently CCOS was held every four years. 1984 in Nanning, 1988 in Nanjing, 1992 in Beijing, 1996 in Hangzhou, 2000 in Shanghai respectively convened third, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh CCOS. From 2002 CCOS was held once every two years and from 2005, it turned into annually meeting. This year the 13th CCOS will be held in Hong Kong. The academic activities of 11 subspecialties promote the rapid development of ophthalmology in China.

In order to award the ophthalmologists who have made outstanding contributions, Golden Apple Award, Golden Key Award, International Gold Award, Outstanding Achievement Award and so on are set up and awarded since 1992.

Since 1930, Zhou Chenghu, Bi Huade made great efforts for ophthalmological literature to be published on special issues of "Chinese Journal of Medicine,¡± which were up to 11 issues till 1943. On October 1, 1950, the inaugural issue of "Chinese Journal of Ophthalmology," ,which belonged to COS, was published officially. The periodical first was regularly published quarterly, then bimonthly and monthly. Isn recent years the pages are increased to 96 from 64 for each issue.

There were 101 members in COS in 1950 and 4,000 registered members in 2000, at which time there were around 22,000 eye doctors in China. COS has more and more extensive international academic exchanges and has held international conference successfully. With the effort of Professor Zhao Jialiang, COS was finally accepted as member by International Federation of Ophthalmological Societies (IFOS) in 2004 and Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO) in 2005.

Today, under the leadership of president Li Xiaoxin, the goal of 9th COS is to raise the academic levels of Chinese Ophthalmologists, promote further development and internationalization of Chinese Ophthalmology, improve the serving quality to patients with eye disease.
